Safety Tips for Using the Buggie Huggie™ Shopping Cart Tray
My son Jonah was the victim of a shopping cart injury.
I used to avoid admitting that, but over the past few years, I’ve been shocked by how many parents have had the same horrifying experience as me.
See, I just thought I was a bad parent - I never knew that a common shopping cart injury for children under 4 is falling out of the cart.
In fact, over 24,000 kids go to the ER in the US every year for a shopping cart fall -- 75% of those are head injuries.
Once I really started researching, I was shocked to learn that the US doesn’t even have mandatory shopping cart safety guidelines (although some other countries do). This is why so many carts don’t have the safety belts in the kids’ seat -- each individual store chooses whether or not that is a priority.
We designed the Buggie Huggie™ shopping cart tray for our very own kids, to help me overcome my nagging fears that Jonah would have yet another fall, and to keep Jonah happy at the same time.

Since we want to help you avoid a shopping cart injury, we’re sharing our 4 simple shopping cart safety practices for using the Buggie Huggie™ shopping cart tray.
BUCKLE
Buckle the safety belt. It’s so simple, but it can be easy to forget. If a store you frequent doesn’t regularly have a safety belt option when you shop there, don’t hesitate to point it out to a manager and ask them if they can order some more!
OPEN
Open the tray to the desired angle. The angle helps the child have the best view and access to whatever snack, toy time, or activity you plan to engage them with, and a quietly entertained kid is usually a less-squirmy kid!
CLIP
Secure the clips to rear of seat. This creates the “huggie” effect of the tray and helps keep your little Houdini from escaping!
GRIP
Grip the claw onto handle. This helps keep the tray stabilized so your child can do their favorite happy dance when they see Daniel Tiger appear on the phone holder add-on!
There are so many things in this world that are beyond our control, but shopping cart safety doesn’t have to be one of them.
